How ethanol-blended petrol helps in lowering vehicular emissions

Increasing pollution levels have been a major cause of concern in India, and the government has taken many steps to promote environmental sustainability in this regard. There has indeed been a significant rise in the number of electric and CNG vehicles on the roads, but a solution was still needed for the enormous number of petrol vehicles that already exist in the country. In order to find a solution to this problem, the government has launched the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program in India. The usage of this product in vehicles results in better quality combustion and lowers the release of pollutants like Carbon Monoxide and many kinds of unburned Hydrocarbons.

Let us now understand in further detail how the usage of ethanol-blended petrol helps in significantly lowering vehicular emissions. 

Restricting CO and HC emissions

One of the chemical properties of ethanol is that its oxygen content is high, which facilitates the process of combustion. Ethanol manufacturing companies in India are focusing on producing the perfect quality ethanol so that after its blending with petrol, the emission of Carbon Monoxides and Hydrocarbons is lowered. 

Lowering Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions

It is true that Nitrogen Oxide emissions from vehicles can be complex, but many studies have suggested that the usage of ethanol-blended petrol can help in reducing them. However, the amount of emissions is completely dependent upon the engine type of a vehicle. 

In Conclusion

From the above discussion, we are able to understand how ethanol-blended petrol is significantly helping reduce the pollution levels of the country. The aim of the government is to achieve 20 percent blending of ethanol by the end of 2025-26 ESY. The country is moving in the right direction and is on track for achieving the goal of EBP of 20%, with contribution from all stakeholders.
